The Genau Guides Collection

7 mountain days / 6 camping nights Machame Route

Kilimanjaro. The Machame Journey.

Seven days. Changing landscapes. A mountain to remember.

Begin beneath the forest canopy, cross open mountain terrain and follow the Machame Route towards a conditional summit attempt. Make time for the daily discoveries, the people beside you and the journey back down.

Give the journey your attention

More than a summit. Seven days of discovery.

A forest trail. An open plateau. The anticipation of the upper mountain. Each stage brings a different perspective.

This sample follows the seven-day Machame itinerary, with separate nights at Barranco, Karanga and Barafu before the summit-attempt stage. Descend via Mweka to complete the journey.

Expect sustained walking, camping, steep ground and a demanding ascent and descent schedule. Discuss your experience and available time before deciding whether this itinerary suits you.

Mountain landscape on Kilimanjaro

YOUR PACE IS PART OF THE PLAN

Prepare carefully, communicate openly and follow your mountain guide’s decisions.

Seven mountain days, not seven holiday days.

Allow additional time for arrival, briefing, equipment checks and rest after the descent. A pre-trek hotel night and a post-trek hotel night would make this a nine-day / eight-night land arrangement, before allowing for international flights.

Follow the mountain journey

One stage at a time.

Walking times and elevations are approximate. Weather, trail conditions and the team’s assessment can change the daily plan. Your final itinerary confirms camps and operating arrangements.

Day 01 The forest beginning

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Hotel → Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Approximate elevation Overnight approximately 2,850 m
Walking estimate Approximately 5–7 hours

Begin the stage

After your pre-trek briefing and equipment arrangements, transfer from the agreed hotel to Machame Gate. Complete registration and meet the mountain team before setting out.

Along the way

Begin walking through the forest with your guide. Let the first day establish a steady rhythm, taking breaks as directed and keeping your daypack essentials accessible.

After the walk

Arrive at Machame Camp, settle into your tent and follow the team’s arrangements for dinner and the evening briefing. Organise your belongings for the next stage.

Overnight

Machame Camp · tent accommodation

Proposed meals

Lunch and dinner

A planning detail

Arrive in Tanzania before day one. Your hotel night, airport transfer, briefing and equipment check must be arranged separately unless included in your quotation.

Day 02 A more open landscape

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Machame Camp → Shira Plateau → Shira Camp

Approximate elevation Overnight approximately 3,850 m
Walking estimate Approximately 4–6 hours

Begin the stage

Pack after breakfast and prepare for another walking day. Check the day’s requirements with your guide before leaving camp.

Along the way

Continue towards the Shira area as the surroundings become more open. Give attention to your footing and the changing scenery, allowing the guide to manage the day’s pace.

After the walk

Settle into the confirmed Shira campsite. Enjoy your meal, prepare warm layers for the evening and discuss how you are feeling with the team.

Overnight

Shira Camp · tent accommodation

Proposed meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

A planning detail

The exact Shira campsite is confirmed in your operating itinerary. Sleeping elevations and walking times vary between itinerary versions.

Day 03 Upwards, then down to camp

Via Lava Tower to Barranco

Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Approximate elevation Lava Tower approximately 4,600 m; overnight approximately 3,960 m
Walking estimate Approximately 6–8 hours

Begin the stage

Leave Shira and continue across increasingly exposed mountain terrain. Keep the day’s layers and weather protection accessible.

Along the way

The planned route passes towards Lava Tower before descending to Barranco. This is a demanding stage despite finishing lower than the day’s high point. Follow the guide’s directions and communicate any symptoms promptly.

After the walk

Arrive in the Barranco area and settle into camp. Rest, eat and prepare for the following day’s route briefing.

Overnight

Barranco Camp · tent accommodation

Proposed meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

A planning detail

Walking higher and sleeping lower is part of this route profile, but it does not guarantee acclimatisation. The guide may adjust the day according to conditions and wellbeing.

Day 04 Across the Barranco Wall

Barranco Camp to Karanga

Barranco Camp → Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp

Approximate elevation Overnight approximately 4,000 m
Walking estimate Approximately 4–5 hours

Begin the stage

Prepare for the Barranco Wall section after breakfast. Listen carefully to your guide’s instructions and keep your hands available where needed.

Along the way

Negotiate steep ground and sections of scrambling, then continue across the route towards Karanga. Take the terrain seriously even where the day’s distance appears short.

After the walk

Settle into Karanga Camp and use the remaining time to organise equipment and rest. Discuss the next stage and any concerns with your guide.

Overnight

Karanga Camp · tent accommodation

Proposed meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

A planning detail

This seven-day version includes a separate Karanga overnight. Mention concerns about steep or exposed terrain before booking so route suitability can be discussed.

Day 05 Prepare for the upper mountain

Karanga Camp to Barafu

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Approximate elevation Overnight approximately 4,670 m
Walking estimate Approximately 4–5 hours

Begin the stage

Leave Karanga for the approach to Barafu. Keep a measured pace and follow the mountain team’s instructions.

Along the way

On reaching camp, prepare the clothing, headlamp and personal items required for the planned summit attempt. Your guide explains the departure, turnaround decisions and descent arrangements.

After the walk

Follow the meal and rest schedule set by the team. The summit attempt commonly begins overnight, so this is a preparation and rest period rather than a conventional full night’s sleep.

Overnight

Barafu Camp · tent accommodation

Proposed meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

A planning detail

Departure for the summit is conditional on your wellbeing, the weather and the guide’s assessment. A summit attempt is not automatic.

Day 06 The summit attempt & descent

Towards Uhuru Peak, then Mweka

Barafu → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak if appropriate → Barafu → Mweka

Approximate elevation Uhuru Peak 5,895 m; overnight approximately 3,100 m
Walking estimate A very long day; often approximately 11–16 hours in total

Begin the stage

If conditions and your wellbeing permit, depart during the night for the ascent towards Stella Point. Continue only as directed by the guide; turning around remains a valid outcome.

Along the way

From Stella Point, the team assesses whether continuing to Uhuru Peak is appropriate. Descend to Barafu, take the planned break and continue towards Mweka as directed.

After the walk

Reach the planned lower camp and settle in after the longest stage of the trek. The descent is a substantial part of the day and deserves the same attention as the ascent.

Overnight

Mweka Camp · tent accommodation

Proposed meals

Meals and refreshments according to the summit-day plan

A planning detail

Reaching the summit is never guaranteed. Weather, symptoms, fatigue or other concerns can require an earlier turnaround or an alternative descent arrangement.

Day 07 Back through the forest

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → agreed hotel or drop-off

Approximate elevation Finish at Mweka Gate, approximately 1,640 m
Walking estimate Approximately 3–4 hours

Begin the stage

After breakfast, pack for the final descent. Keep suitable footwear and weather protection available for the forest trail.

Along the way

Continue with your guide to Mweka Gate and complete the exit arrangements. Meet your confirmed transfer for the journey to the agreed hotel or drop-off point.

After the walk

Enjoy time to shower, rest and reflect on the trek if a post-trek hotel stay has been arranged. Continue with your separately confirmed onward plans.

Overnight

Hotel accommodation only if included in your quotation

Proposed meals

Breakfast; other meals as confirmed

A planning detail

Avoid a tight flight connection after the descent. Confirm hotel nights, transfers and onward travel before booking your flights.

Rest between the stages

Six nights on the mountain.

This Machame sample uses tents rather than Marangu-style hut accommodation. Your quotation confirms tent occupancy, sleeping equipment, meal arrangements and facilities.

Before the trek

Arrival hotel

Allow time for arrival, briefing and equipment checks. The named hotel, meal plan and transfer arrangements are quoted separately unless included.

Mountain nights 1–6

Tented accommodation

Proposed camps are Machame, Shira, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Mweka. Ask what tents, mats and sleeping equipment are supplied or available to hire.

After the descent

A night to recover

Consider a hotel stay after leaving Mweka Gate. Confirm your transfer, room arrangements and onward plans rather than relying on a tight same-day flight.

BEGIN BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Prepare for the walking. Understand the altitude.

Walking and equipment

Practise sustained walking suited to your ability, including descents. Test boots, layers and your daypack. Request the complete equipment list before purchasing or hiring kit.

Altitude and personal advice

Physical fitness does not prevent altitude illness. Review the ascent profile with a clinician familiar with high-altitude travel, particularly if you have existing conditions or previous altitude illness.

Guiding and emergency arrangements

Confirm the guiding team, communication equipment, monitoring practices, emergency procedures and arrangements if you need to leave the trek early.

Insurance and complete costs

Ask your insurer to confirm cover for the exact activity and maximum altitude, including applicable medical and evacuation costs. Review any exclusions carefully.

Tell your guide promptly if you feel unwell. Do not continue ascending with symptoms of altitude illness. The guide’s decisions may require a turnaround or descent.

BEFORE THE FIRST STEP

A few things to know.

Ask about the details that matter to you before selecting your departure.

Ask about this trek ↗
Does seven days include arrival and hotel nights?

No. This sample counts seven mountain days and six camping nights. Arrival, briefing arrangements and hotel stays before and after the trek are additional unless expressly included. Allow enough total time in Tanzania for those arrangements.

Is this a wildlife safari?

This is a Kilimanjaro mountain trek rather than a vehicle-based wildlife safari. A separate safari in parks such as Tarangire, Ngorongoro or Serengeti can be discussed for additional days.

Is the summit guaranteed?

No. The summit attempt depends on your wellbeing, conditions and the guide’s assessment. Turning around or descending earlier may be necessary. The booking is for the trekking arrangements, not a guaranteed summit.

What is the Barranco Wall like?

The route includes steep ground and scrambling where you may use your hands. Discuss your comfort with this terrain before booking. Do not choose the itinerary on the assumption that every stage is a straightforward walking path.

Are mountain huts included?

This Machame sample uses tent accommodation. Your quotation confirms the tents, occupancy, mats, sleeping equipment and facilities provided. Ask about a different route if hut accommodation is a priority.

Can I join as a first-time mountain trekker?

Share your walking experience and preparation time so suitability can be discussed. This is a demanding high-altitude itinerary. Fitness, confidence on rough terrain and understanding the daily plan all matter, and fitness does not prevent altitude illness.

Can we choose another route or add days?

Yes, request alternatives during planning. A different route or schedule changes the camp sequence, logistics and price. Compare the full day-by-day proposal rather than assuming an extra day can be added anywhere.

What equipment and emergency support are included?

Ask for the written equipment list and emergency arrangements. Confirm guiding, communications, available emergency equipment, response procedures and evacuation coordination. Do not assume specialist equipment or a particular service is included unless stated.

Can we add Zanzibar or a safari afterwards?

Tell us your available days and preferences so a separate extension can be proposed. Allow time after the descent before onward activities and flights, and confirm your final transport and accommodation arrangements.
