Mkomazi National Park

About Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park is a lesser-known gem located in northeastern Tanzania, nestled between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Usambara Mountains. This semi-arid savannah park offers striking landscapes and a unique blend of wildlife not commonly found in other Tanzanian parks. Mkomazi is especially notable for its successful black rhino sanctuary and African wild dog conservation efforts, making it one of the few places in the country where visitors can see these critically endangered species. Its terrain includes acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and stunning views of the Pare and Usambara mountain ranges.

Mkomazi is part of the Northern Safari Circuit, although it is less frequented than big names like Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire. Its location near Mount Kilimanjaro and Moshi/Arusha makes it accessible for those looking to explore a more peaceful and off-the-beaten-path destination in the north. Because of its quiet atmosphere and limited visitor traffic, Mkomazi is ideal for travelers seeking solitude and a more intimate safari experience.

The park shares a border with Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, creating a vital transboundary ecosystem. It is home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, hartebeests, elands, lesser kudus, and more than 450 species of birds. While big cat sightings are rare, Mkomazi’s unique value lies in its role in species conservation, eco-tourism, and its beautiful, uncrowded landscapes. As awareness grows, Mkomazi is quickly earning recognition as an important and rewarding stop within the Northern Circuit.
