Katavi National Park

About Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and unspoiled safari destinations, located in the far southwest of the country. Often described as a hidden treasure, Katavi offers vast floodplains, seasonal lakes, dense woodlands, and an abundance of wildlife with barely any tourist crowds. During the dry season, thousands of hippos crowd into shrinking water pools, and immense herds of buffalo, elephants, and antelope gather near the Katuma River and its associated wetlands, attracting large predators like lions, leopards, and crocodiles.

Katavi belongs to the Western Safari Circuit, which also includes Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks. This circuit is perfect for seasoned safari-goers looking for raw wilderness, deep isolation, and an authentic African safari away from mainstream routes. Due to its remoteness and limited infrastructure, access to Katavi is typically via small charter flights, making the journey part of the adventure itself.

The park’s limited number of visitors enhances its exclusivity—often, guests may find themselves as the only ones in the entire area during game drives. Birdlife is also prolific, with over 400 species recorded. The combination of dramatic wildlife scenes, untouched scenery, and the park’s raw, untamed character makes Katavi National Park an unforgettable destination within the Western Circuit. It’s ideal for those seeking a truly wild, off-the-grid safari experience in Tanzania.
