Saadani National Park

About Saadani National Park

Saadani National Park is Tanzania’s only wildlife sanctuary that borders the Indian Ocean, offering a rare and remarkable combination of savannah and beach in one destination. Located between Dar es Salaam and Tanga, this unique park allows visitors to enjoy traditional game drives alongside relaxing moments on untouched tropical beaches. It’s not uncommon to see elephants and buffalo near the shoreline or even witness giraffes silhouetted against the ocean backdrop. Saadani’s coastal location makes it a perfect destination for travelers seeking both wildlife and beach experiences without having to travel far inland.

Saadani is part of the Eastern Safari Circuit, a lesser-known but growing circuit that caters to travelers looking for off-the-beaten-path adventures. Unlike the crowded parks in the Northern Circuit, Saadani provides a quiet, intimate safari experience. The park is home to lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, and a variety of primates. The Wami River runs through the park and is perfect for boat safaris, where visitors can see hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife up close.

One of Saadani’s standout features is its pristine coastline, with palm-fringed beaches that remain largely untouched. After a morning game drive or river safari, visitors can relax on the beach or take a dip in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Saadani is also part of important marine conservation efforts, and the park helps protect nesting sites for endangered green turtles. For travelers seeking a “bush-meets-beach” safari, Saadani offers an experience that’s truly unlike any other in Tanzania.
