Mahale Mountains National Park

About Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and enchanting destinations, located on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika in the far west of the country. This park is renowned for its wild chimpanzee trekking, where visitors can hike through lush tropical forests to observe habituated chimpanzee groups in their natural habitat. The backdrop of forested mountains cascading down to the crystal-clear waters of the lake creates a stunning and unique wilderness experience that feels more like a tropical paradise than a typical safari destination.

Mahale is part of the Western Safari Circuit, along with Gombe and Katavi National Parks. This circuit is celebrated for offering off-the-beaten-path experiences far from the tourist crowds of the northern and southern circuits. Due to its isolation, Mahale is typically accessed via small aircraft followed by a boat ride along Lake Tanganyika, which adds to its sense of adventure and exclusivity. It’s a destination for those who seek true immersion in nature and are drawn to unique wildlife encounters.

Beyond chimpanzees, Mahale is home to other primates such as red colobus and blue monkeys, as well as forest-dwelling antelope and over 350 species of birds. Lake Tanganyika offers activities like swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing in its clear, freshwater depths. There are no roads within the park, so all exploration is done on foot or by boat. Mahale Mountains National Park is a magical place where forest, mountain, and lake ecosystems converge, making it one of Africa’s most extraordinary and peaceful wildlife destinations.
