9 Days Ndutu Calving Season

On this 9 days Ndutu migration Tanzania safari, you will get a unique opportunity to experience the most incredible parks of the northern circuit of Tanzania which are Tarangire National Park which is known for its massive African elephants, the Serengeti National Park which is well known for its huge concentration of wild animals including the great migrating herds of wildebeests and zebras, Lake Ndutu which is situated in the Ngorongoro conservation area and a part of Serengeti eco-system which is our main target from January to April and during February it is the best time to witness the calving as they spread out across the short-grass plains; most calf in a 2-3 week window and most predators are just around waiting for their opportunities to make a hunt, The Ngorongoro crater which is well known as a world heritage site as well as a geo-park and also known as the unbroken caldera, Lake Eyasi which is ‘a modern hunter-gatherer people living in northern Tanzania, and Lastly Lake Manyara which is well known for its bird life and tree climbing lions.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

You will be picked up from the airport by a Genau Guides Limited representative and conveyed to your accommodation in Arusha where you will overnight, relax, and prepare in anticipation of the adventures to come.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

In the morning our safari guide will collect you from our lodge in Arusha with a broad smile in anticipation of our coming adventures. The drive to Tarangire National Parks takes approximately 2hours on a good tarmac road across gently rolling Maasai plains with scattered acacia trees. Tarangire National Park, is well known for its large elephant herds, diverse landscape of seasonal swamps, savanna and the life giving Tarangire River which channels its’ way through the park. From the open roof of the jeep, we will seek out the myriad animals that here inhabit including zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant and giraffe. It is possible we will glimpse Simba stalking his prey.

Day 4: Karatu to Lake Eyasi

On this, our fourth day, we set out for the Hadzabe ‘a modern hunter-gatherer people living in northern Tanzania. They are considered one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa with approximately 1300 tribe members. Their native homeland includes Lake Eyasi Valley and nearby hills. The Hadzabe speak a unique language known as ‘Hadzane’, which incorporates clicking and popping sounds. After exploring this unique tribe and its amazing culture, we will drive back to the hotel/lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Lake Eyasi – Ndutu

After breakfast we will head to the Lake Ndutu area, situated in the Ngorongoro conservation area, part of the southern Serengeti eco-system. Lake Ndutu is alkaline, like most of the other Rift lakes, however the water is still drinkable and used by a wide array of local wildlife.
We will have lunch on the way going, and after lunch we will do an afternoon game drive in the Ndutu area. The majority of the wildebeest migration can normally be found on the short-grass plains from December to April. The area is usually heavily populated with elephant, birds and resident game.

Day 6 & 7: South Serengeti (Ndutu)

In these two days after breakfast, enjoy a full day game drive in the Ndutu area. Explore the range of different habitats that include swamps, woodland, soda lakes and the world-famous Serengeti short grass plains. See great herds of wildebeest and zebra. During a short time, frame around February, normally lasting for about 3 weeks, the majority of the wildebeest calve. The sea of grass provides little cover and the young are easy pickings for a variety of predators. Wildebeest calves can run minutes after they are born and within 3 days, they are normally strong enough to keep up with the herd.

Day 8: Ndutu to Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you will head out for an en route game drive through the Serengeti. You might be able to spot some of the “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard – before embarking on your journey to Ngorongoro Crater. This UNESCO world heritage site, formed millions of years ago, is 600 m deep and covers roughly around 260 square kilometers. Due to its dense animal population of approximately 25 000, the Crater offers the best game viewing of all the parks in Tanzania. You will arrive at the Crater rim before lunch. You will descend into the Crater and very quickly, you will be able to see wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elephants and some of the more than 500 bird species in the area. With a little bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of the endangered black rhino through the grass.After lunch and a full afternoon inside the Crater, you will head to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 9: Lake Manyara National Park

On this day, after breakfast, we drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a small but diverse park 120km west of Arusha. The Lake is covering some seventy percent of the parklands, and is home to thousands of flamingos and over 500 other bird species. On our exploration of the park, we will see monkey, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant, and with some luck, lions lounging in the trees.
After an unforgettable game drive, we wend our way back to Arusha ready for the flight back home, with our adventure at an end, replete with images of the African Wilds to take through our lives journey.
